Château de La Brède

The Château de La Brède, home of the writer and philosopher Charles Louis de Secondat, better known as Montesquieu, remained the property of the family until 2004. Built in the 14th century on the ruins of an older castle, the building underwent several alterations and improvements until the 19th century. The castle has retained its appearance of a medieval fortress and is reflected in the water of the wide moat. The interior discovery leads the visitor in the footsteps of the writer through the emblematic places where he worked, including his library and his room preserved in its 18th century state. A visit to the chapel, dining room and lounges reveals the wealth of collections and furniture gathered by the family over the years. At the heart of a wooded estate, Montesquieu has structured a large, regular garden consisting of a grove with paths forming a star-shaped network. Pour bien vous recevoir : Château de La Brède welcomes you in compliance with health regulations. Wearing a mask is obligatory during the guided tour. The number of people on a guided tour is limited. Details of all the measures taken are available on the website www.chateaulabrede.com.
